The cheapest and quickest, and still no Gulf. The catch is reliability: Ethiopian has a weaker on-time record and Addis re-screens every transit passenger, so security queues can be tight. The Addis connection itself is protected on one Ethiopian ticket. Fine if saving £226 matters more than the reliability margin, but on a fixed return date the SWISS or Lufthansa option is the safer bet.

For a trip with a hard return deadline in a disrupted region, reliability wins. A Lufthansa Group carrier that never goes near the Gulf, with one clean Johannesburg reclaim and a 3 hour buffer, is worth the premium over Ethiopian. This is the smart choice.

Set aside for now: the Gulf routes

Qatar via Doha (about £755) and Emirates via Dubai (about £995) would avoid the Johannesburg reclaim, but both transit Gulf airspace that is being closed on and off right now, and Qatar has been the most disrupted airline of all. On a fixed return date, they are not worth the cancellation risk while the situation lasts. Worth a re-check nearer the date if things calm down.

The Johannesburg reclaim

It happens on the way in only: clear South African immigration, collect the bags, re-check them, then the short hop to Durban. Allow 3 hours. Johannesburg to Durban runs roughly hourly on several airlines, so if the booked connection is tighter than 3 hours, take a slightly later hop. On the way home, Johannesburg is just an airside change with no reclaim.

Getting to Milan Malpensa

Genoa to Malpensa by train is about 4 hours (one change at Milano Centrale, then the Malpensa Express), roughly £25 to £45. For the evening flight on the 7th, leave Genoa in the early-to-mid afternoon.
